The mining-induced ground deformations can be monitored using SAR data.
Underground mining disturbs the balance of rock mass. It often induces the ground deformations which can cause damages in the over- and under-ground infrastructure. The problem is especially severe in the highly urbanized areas. In order to minimize the influence of mining-induced deformations the constant monitoring of such deformations should be conducted. Such monitoring may be based on the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data.
Processing of SAR imagery results in the maps of vertical ground deformations with very high spatial and temporal resolutions. Application of DInSAR (Differential Interferometry SAR) method allow to determine the vertical deformations with a centimeter accuracy. While the PSInSAR (Permanent InSAR) method allow to monitor small, long-term deformations which sometimes occur even a few years after the end of underground exploitation.
