Satellite radars (SAR) provide information about current flood situation regardless of weather conditions.
The problem of flood extend monitoring is a very important issue. It can be done based on the remote sensing data acquired using satellite or/and airborne sensors. From all available remote sensing data the SAR images can play the most significant role in the process of flood monitoring. The SAR system can operate in nearly all weather conditions, such as heavy clouds, rain or snow, fog, etc. The optical sensors in such situations are not able to provide information about Earth surface. Due to their characteristics the SAR images are often used in crisis management during the flood. The avaliable satellite SAR systems can perform images of selected region in every few days. This allows monitoring the flood situation within large areas with high temporal and spatial resolution.
